THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT [2001]

Indie-actor Cory McAbee writes, directs and stars in this bizarre little black & white western/sci-fi/musical/comedy.
The American Astronaut has a look that's reminiscent of the 1930's Flash Gordon serials, a world and attitude like Joss Whedon's Firefly and a bizarre series of characters that wouldn't be out of place in a David Lynch film.
What's strange is that it looks like it was shot by two different eyes. Half of the shots are quite interesting and framed with care. Others look like a drunk monkey shot it with a bottle in one hand and a sandwich in the other. The songs themselves, provided by The Billy Nayer Show, are an unmemorable hit & miss, bordering along the lines of cow-punk and odd-rock.
In the end, this was an enjoyable and incredibly bizarre experience but would have benefited with a good half hour cut out turning it into a fabulous short film.
