THE VILLAGE [2004]

M. Night Shyamalan knows how to create creepy moods and atmosphere with great effect and that's pretty much what saves The Village from being a complete disaster.
It has moments of strained and awkward dialogue, silly plot elements that are handled poorly and an "surprise" ending that I saw coming from about 20 minutes into the film.  However the photography, music and performances are wonderful and make it all the worthwhile.

I think the better twist would have been no twist, but I actually really like this one.

First time seeing this. I knew nothing about the 'plot' going in.
The performances from everyone were fantastic. Bryce Dallas Howard stole the show from the moment she walked in. William Hurt’s best hour since Altered States.
Howard’s music was great.
And the settings, and costumes were beautiful.
It’s such a shame all those things were ruined by Shyamalan’s amateur framing, and some shoddy camera work. Those slow zooms really irritated me after a while.
The story, which was full of so much promise trickled into a large puddle of shit.
Such a waste of a great cast.
