Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)

The real and not-at-all completely made-up story of "Weird Al" Yankovic, who rose up from humble beginnings as an accordion-playing parodist to become one of the greatest original pop icons of all-time, to the envy of other artists. 

In the same vein as Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, it skewers a lot of usual biopic tropes and goes off the rails in a big way, although it's never quite as funny as it could have been if it leaned completely into spoof territory. Once you're in on the joke, it gets hard to top itself. Daniel Radcliffe feels weirdly miscast as the lead, but it's fun to see the likes of Dr. Demento (Rainn Wilson), Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) and other famous names pop up along the way.

Note: This film is so low-budget, they couldn't actually use the rights to many of Al's songs, which is inconceivable since he remains the producer on this. Maybe that's part of the joke.

The Naked Gun (2025)

Son of a gun. 31 years later, this series gets resuscitated by Seth MacFarlane and The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer, with Liam Neeson playing the part of Frank Drebin Jr. (no doubt cast because he was listed next alphabetically). Similar to Leslie Nielsen's turn in Airplane!, Liam Neeson gets to show off his comedy chops, and if there's one person who could nail the Priscilla Presley role, it's Pamela Anderson. It's a loving homage in the best possible sense, and while it doesn't come close to the original, the scattershot approach hits its target quite a few times. It works best with a receptive crowd, and it's dense enough that you can rewatch it and pick up on different gags. It's undeniably dumb, but kind of refreshing to see this lost style of comedy back in 2025.

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING [2016]

Musical-comedy trio The Lonely Island return to the big-screen with the impressively funny mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
In the silly spirit of This Is Spinal Tap, we follow the rise & fall of an idiot modern day pop-star who doesn't realize his real claim to fame was with the other two members from his acclaimed boy-band roots.
The comedy is a smooth mix of clever, dumb, vulgar, immature and satirical but always manages to feel quite natural in it's hilariously artificial execution.  You might need some knowledge of the modern pop music business and the social media hoo-ha that surrounds it to get many of the satirical jokes but there's plenty of universal laughs to be had too.

HOT ROD [2007]

Inane comedies like director Akiva Schaffer's Andy Samberg vehicle Hot Rod are meant to be watched with your brain checked at the door.
Because it's written, directed & starring all three members of comedic musical act The Lonely Island it should give you an idea as to what sort of film you're getting yourself into.  It's not particularly smart, memorable or well-done but it supplies enough chuckles and guffaws to make it enjoyable enough.
