Making no attempt to mask the inspiration of the controversial events of District Six in South Africa, director/writer Neill Blomkamp crafts a brilliant sci-fi action thriller aptly titled District 9.
The film seamlessly blends all the elements of what makes a good action sci-fi with some disturbing themes of xenophobia and social segregation.
It's gritty and violent narrative throws in some mockumentary styled footage to act as a sort of an exposition. Meanwhile the backbone of the film follows the metamorphosis of a young man with a first-rate performance from newcomer Sharlto Copley.
The third act does fall into run of the mill shoot 'em up action but it's all fine because through all the gunfire the characters are still developing. An unsettling social satire at it's finest, District 9 proves that there are still smart FX films being produced.

I was a bit conflicted by the fact that it's a metaphor for the inhumanities committed to the African people by way of aliens yet the real black people in the movie are depicted as subhuman monsters.
I give it 4 out of 5 as well.
Yes, I tackled that subject in the original draft. It is a little unsettling that went by unnoticed by so many people.
This film deserves a much larger review of essay proportions....perhaps a Clock review at a later date.
There are so many aspects of that film that I'd love to read an in depth piece on. The special effects they achieved on that budget are incredibly impressive to me.

I've been planning a Clock review for this one for ages now, just never got around to it. If you want to go ahead cuckoo go for it. I haven't even started writing anything down yet.

I laughed at the popcorn deleted scene and then slashed my wrist when humanity's inhumanity message hit home
I would read a more in depth essay on this film.
Cool sci-fi stuff as a metaphor for problems of the human condition is how it should be.
