EDDIE THE EAGLE [2016]

For some odd reason director Dexter Fletcher & co. find it necessary to exaggerate an already unbelievable true story with Eddie the Eagle.
Inspired by British ski-jumper Eddie Edwards, the film follows his rise to fame as the most lovable personality to emerge from the 1988 Winter Olympics.
If they went so much to change the story, why couldn't they have avoided the endless amounts of underdog '80's sports movie clichés?  Maybe that's the point, if it is trying to emulate the films of it's time.  Thankfully Taron Egerton turns in a irresistible performance as the title subject, while Hugh Jackman is a ruggedly charming as ever as a drunken curmudgeon made up only for the film.  It's sweet enough to not leave a bitter aftertaste but leaves much to be desired.

AUTOMATA [2014]

Writer/director Gabe Ibáñez's Automata can be best described as a mixture of Isaac Asimov's I, Robot theories and a drier version of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner aesthetics.
Like both worlds it can be compared to, Automata suffers greatly from it's lack of heart, where it could have heavily benefited from, inplace of it's lack of originality.  There's some interesting scenes set up and the second act is actually quite engaging but there's just so much wrong with it's logic everything else just seems to float on nothing.
Major flaws aside the film supplies some fine entertainment fluff for a boring Sunday afternoon but don't expect much more that.

SEVERANCE [2006]

What's supposed to be a leisurely weekend in the Hungarian mountains goes horribly wrong when people start dying one by one. It's pretty safe to admit the premise has become tiresome, however Severance changes the pace enough to prevent a complete waste of time.
Director Christopher Smith throws in a mischievously evil sense of humor, while effectively building up the tension as well, giving off a Dog Soldiers vibe. Admittedly the film has it's fair share of bumps and slips, especially in final act, but it's entertaining enough to satisfy the horror-hound craving some hilarious bloody carnage.
