Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

I liked it better than the W. S. Anderson films, but that's not saying much. This reboot adapts the origins of the games much more faithfully, but still ends up lacking. It held my attention because I was familiar with the characters and the creature designs and locations looked cool. Other than that, it was forgettable and destined to be ripped apart. Seems like either way, fans are never happy.

2 final forms out of 5

Donal as Irons, eh? How was he as an outright bastard? I’ve only experienced him as irritated sitcom guy.

Which, also describes him in Ghost Rider. Damn, Cuckoo did not appreciate the first. I find it aggressively OKAY thanks to the extended cut. The villains aren’t anything, but the Nic and Sam Elliot stuff is GOLD. I only wish it could have been mirrored in the second, with Johnny and (an appropriately adult) Danny. Then, them with Robbie, in the third.

’twas not to be~

Donal was fine, I have no beef with him. I think most people took issue with the characterization of Leon as a bit of a puss and a lunkhead, which is enough to take it down another ½ (and I have half a mind to do so). You haven't seen it yet? I think this film might break you. I think it's the PWSA films that really gave a benchmark to everything that followed it and elevates it just by comparison.

Yeah, I'm with you. I dug the first Ghost Rider. I have absolutely no memory of the second. I wonder how Ryan Gosling will fare as his first comic book character.

No, no, no. Lesson learned. I’m not messing with the movies, anymore. Relax, breathe, zen, focus.

I live for Leon needing Ada, but he kicks ALL manner of ass when she’s not around. He’s definitely not dumb. Was that maybe a statement of bias on the part of the writer? Was Chris an ultimate badass in it?

The only thing I liked about Spirit Of Vengeance was the bucket-wheel excavator. Robbie is the All Rider, but unlike how I usually feel about such things, I’ve concluded that you almost HAVE to give Johnny the others’ powers. All he had in the comics, originally, was the shotgun, and that they made him a cyborg for a while. At the very least he needs the Penance Stare. Sorry, Danny.

I went in not knowing that it was meant to be a reboot, so I thought I was losing my mind during the recap. They went 95% of the way to having a child Ghost Rider, and just let it fizzle. Toei was working with Marvel in the 70s. Ghost Rider and Kamen Rider have the same driving mythos. There have been child Kamen Riders. He flamed on! Just have him summon a bike! Nope, he instantly turns into a hostage.

Toei pulls that kind of shit in Sentai and Rider, with female characters. Nice to see it happened with a guy? No. That was a deliberate joke. It’s not right, regardless of demographics. You make a promise; you keep it. Don’t have someone fly millimeters from heaven, just to slam them into the concrete.

I just feel like Gosling would work better as Danny. Ignore the second movie; have Nic there in a mentor role, like in the comics. Didn’t they already establish Robbie in…Agents of Shield? One of the shows. Oh, he’s looking a bit old for the character, now. New Robbie, please.

It was mostly a Claire and Chris affair. Leon is depicted as a rookie here, so that explains away his willful ignorance (as well as bad writing), but he wasn't a very good character in this to begin with. Having him portrayed by a half-Indian actor was another bone of contention with the fans, but I guess it needed to reach its quota of diversity somehow. An unnecessary casualty of canon to the benefit of no one.

Ah, fuck it. You've convinced me to drop it down a peg. Good riddance.

This is kind of a spoiler, but Ada was teased during the credits for the next movie (which obviously never happened).

Chris and Claire together is a worthy idea that I wish was in more than just Code Veronica (which, I loathe) and Mercenaries 3D (which, is a stand-alone mini-game). I think he’s just in Raid Mode, in Revelations 2, but none of the advertising let on that he was in Revelations 1, at all, so they might have some time there.

Being a rookie isn’t something they can use as an excuse, though, because he’s one in 2. He’s a little naive in the remake, and I prefer that to how self-righteous he is in the OG, but he’s perfectly competent. Let me guess, they didn’t use Marvin? They could have used some of the characters from Outbreak, too. Mark would work. Jim. Yoko. The resources for diversity exist, without having to change Leon.

I will spare you the full extent of my Ada adoration. Wasn’t she in one of the…relax. breathe. zen. focus.

He killed most of the real characters, to make his wife look good, didn’t he?

I liked Li Bingbing. I don't remember what happened to her character in that movie. In fact, I hardly remember anything that happened in any of them ('cept 'splosions). Hmm...maybe I will end up nutting those films eventually. I've seen each one exactly once, but never felt the need to return. Maybe they're better when binged all in a row? Uggghhhh...

At one point, I saw the collection at my local independent game store. I considered it, because it seemed like the movies were this big part of the franchise I was ignoring. Six movies. C’mon. But, I didn’t get it.

“Watched” the first one, thanks to a library. There is one thing I have to give Cregger credit for: Bryan did things in multiple locations, before getting to a lab, at the end. I am grateful for that. Milla can’t claim that, in the first movie.

Spirit Halloween allegedly has kukris, this year. Didn’t have them in stock, but they claimed they’ll give me a call, if they get them in a subsequent shipment. Wanted them for Keith, but I found out that Alice has some. Let’s be real: No one comes over, but just the thought of having to immediately bark out, “Those aren’t for Alice!” was anathema to me XD

Thank goodness Keith’s enough of a weeb to switch to katanas (named Shinjuku & Shibuya) for his Ninja outfit. Just had to buy a second one.
