THE BABADOOK [2014]

Every now and then a horror movie sneaks in through the back door that proves the genre can be done quite effectively without resorting to silly twists 'n turns, excessive gore or disturbing subject material.
Australian writer/director Jennifer Kent delivers with The Babadook.
A widow and her son find something nasty might be attempting to take over their house through a mysterious children's book.  It manages to creep under your skin and scare the pants off you but what makes the scares most effective is the surprising amount of heart put into the characters and their difficult situation.  The creature is seldom ever seen and when it is, it's not very clear making for a higher level of the wiggins.  It's a simple, short quiet little horror film that is probably one of the best I've seen in many years.
