Oasis (2002)

AKA: 오아시스 (Oasiseu)

Recently released from prison, a mentally challenged derelict wanders adrift through life until he meets a woman with cerebral palsy who shares a tenuous connection to his past. Together, they strike up an unconventional relationship colored by her internal fantasy life, much to the chagrin of everyone around them. Lee Chang-dong's drama digs into deeply uncomfortable subject matter, but comes through with empathy towards those living with difficult conditions to whom society turns a blind eye. The acting from Sul Kyung-gu and Moon So-ri is very powerful, though I suppose audiences nowadays might take offense.
