Black Sheep (1996)

Chris Farley plays the bumbling brother to a politician running for governor, whose misguided attempts to help him out requires David Spade's character to intervene to keep him in line, in a retread on the familiar Tommy Boy formula. It's not quite the good-natured comedy classic that film was, but the chemistry between Farley and Spade is off the charts and the laughs are contagious. The flimsy plot is not as important as the set-ups which involve a lot of slapstick humor and moments designed to showcase their broad comedy style. It might not be the funniest buddy comedy, but it does have its heart in the right place.

I was just talking about these two movies, yesterday! At this point, I genuinely have a hard time parsing out which scenes were in which movie. I hear people complain about Black Sheep, in comparison to Tommy Boy, but it's clearly become kind of a giant composite, to me.
Which is 100% fine. It's all Farley/Spade chemistry. I don't know why people would complain. Needless splitting of hairs, I say.

Rest In Peace, sir.

Yes! Both films are great. The details tend to blur in my mind. This feels like an unofficial sequel to me, even though they're playing different characters (but pretty much the same archetypes).

Really wish we got more of them together, but at least there's a lot of sketches still undiscovered from the SNL days. It's always a treat whenever I come across one I haven't seen before.

You just made me realize what they're like: Stephen King's The Regulators & Desperation, and Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask. Same character 'models,' different (but similar) characters and situations. Brilliant. We need a name to give to the Collection we've just stumbled upon. There has to be more examples, out there, too...

My immediate first thought was Doppelgängers, but I don’t think that’s accurate. Almost like mirrors of each other? I know there are quite a few examples (especially with the same cast playing different roles), but my brain’s not cooperating right now. Companion pieces, maybe? Parallel universes?

Two Sides of the Same Coin?

That works. Though you'd have to really define the parameters of that because I think a lot would qualify under that same heading. Let me know if any more examples come to mind, or if there's a list you want me to post on your behalf.
