Fourth time's the charm.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe kicks off Phase Six of the Multiverse Saga with its inaugural introduction of Marvel's First Family. Taking place in an alternate timeline (Earth-828), it's a retro-futuristic, sci-fi take that works to great effect here. A shiny herald from outer space warns of a planet devourer, just as Reed Richards and Sue Storm announce their own bombshell to the world. This feels like a scaled down, intimate story, even as it encompasses the likes of Silver Surfer and Galactus while the fate of billions hangs in the balance. It manages to inject humanity and gravitas to the characters, making them feel like a real family. After numerous attempts in 1994, 2005, 2007 and 2015, they finally do justice to these characters. Best of all, you don't need to know anything else about the MCU in order to follow along. Similar to Superman (2025), it's not an origin story; it throws you straight into this world while remaining completely standalone from the rest (for now). So if you've been holding out on these movies, this is a good jumping off point. It's all part of the new direction of the MCU which will focus on the "hits" only. This will be followed by a new Spider-Man and Avengers movie in 2026, eventually culminating in Secret Wars.
3 clobberin' times out of 5
Note: Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released exactly one year from now; the longest time between theatrical dates in a good while.

Johnny Storm shirt at Hot Topic. What kind of loser......... You're out of the emo order if you wear that. I expect better of you, Hot Topic. Better call Squeenix and ask them to whip-up a Vincent shirt, as a personal apology, to me.
I'm sorry, Bud. I've always found Fantastic Four to be antiquated and hokey. I saw the vast majority of it (again, amazed at how much of, and how quickly, a movie can be posted on youtube, now). Felt like upgrading Sue's forcefields to telekinesis was an upgrade, at first, but my overall disgust burned back through, really fast.
Michael Chiklis Ben can come be an X-Man, but the rest of you, keep walking, back to the early 70s.
Sorry. Wanted to vent.
I like the retrofuturism vibe, and Ben's Kirby brows are a nice touch. But why are they running away from Galactus and Gender Swaped Surfer? (Genuine question. I've not seen the movie.)
She really is in the comics, but as I saw someone say, “It doesn’t matter. If I don’t like/want it, who cares if it showed up in the comics?” I know I’ve defended 0rigins with that, but the spirit of that statement is true. Even if something has foundations in truth/reality/logic, it still doesn’t matter if you don’t personally like it. That’s something I’ve struggled with for a long time. You know the rest of this story, Doc.
Galactus really messes with my sensibilities, as someone who loves giant robots and can’t change that. Believe me, I’ve fucking tried. I know people are used to the Shadow of the Colossus approach, with comic matters. I’m not completely immune to it, either. Hiiiiii, Sentinels~ #FastballSpecial But, Transformers ARE Marvel characters. Roddy has the resume. Or, bring in Primus. Have Unicron get into a punch-up with him, because they both want the same snack. Publish one Pacific Rim comic, so we can get Raleigh and Mako in on it. #UprisingIsn’tReal Do a crossover with Boom Studios. At the very least, Reed should just call Paul Rudd. But, for me…step aside puny, mere fleshings; it’s time for robots and pilots to go to work.
Spoilers below
They go to Galactus, refuse to give him Franklin in return for leaving Earth alone, have to get back to Earth before him, then teleport him far away, without his ship, so it’ll be a bit before he can get back. It’s…a silly bit of back and forth. But, this movie does have Mole Man (Moleman?) and sapient apes, so it has serious competition in the silly department.
Bitch-slap him with a cargo ship while Roddy gives him the worst case of wisdom indigestion he’ll ever have. I’m biased; I know.
She may be, but I don't believe it's anything other than a pure gender politics decision to not use Norrin Radd, i.e., the character that's primarily and overwhelmingly associated with Galactus. Maybe they gave her Radd's back-story.
Thanks. I appreciate the spoiler warning – you know me well – but on this occasion I don’t have a problem with full info because I've no plans to ever watch it. The only thing I want from Disney is for them to licence out the (20th Century) Fox catalogue. They bought it and put it in their vault. There are some great 80s and 90s movies in there that'll likely never see disc release because of Disney's 'we don’t really want it, but we don't want anyone else to have it' attitude. ☹
Shadow of the Colossus! Hell, yeah. Now I want to play it!!
There was some Pacific Rim comics. I think it was Legendary Comics that put them out (as in Legendary Pictures, the folks that US'd Godzilla).
Her story is basically the same as his, yep. In the comics, he became the herald to save her, and his planet. In the movie, she does it for her daughter and planet. I immediately thought that they did it so Johnny would have someone to flirt with. And, I wasn’t 100% wrong…
For selfish reasons, I would have liked to have seen them bring Larry back. Legit thinking about getting an Alpha Trion figure, so I can have a Larry-Bot. I don't want a Surfer figure. Alpha Trion looks cooler. Transforms.
The speculation about Anchor beings is funny. I’m like, “Oh, you mean Singularity Points.” Are we bringing Den-O stuff into the MCU? Have we called Takeru Sato and the boys?
Yes, I know. I was always like, “Infinity War and Endgame are ripping off Go-Onger.” Other way around; happened in the comics first.
Yep, I had the Year Zero graphic novel. I decided that I preferred the movie's insinuation, born from omission, that Stacker always piloted alone. He's the commander. The big dog. Saw action before the team he assembled. It's trope-y, but Pacific Rim is nothing but mecha tropes. Funnily, the one thing about Uprising that I liked, is that they confirm that that is the case. Retconning Year Zero. <--Just added this last sentence, so this all actually made sense.
