Parasite (2019)

AKA: Gisaengchung

A poor family of grifters attempt to ingratiate themselves within the employ of a wealthy household. A searing satire of monumental proportions, the way this film builds and builds upon itself is brilliant. This stuff is as captivating as Game of Thrones. It's such a fun twisty-turny ride, I'd rather not say anything more about it and let the viewer experience it for themselves. Submitted as a non-English entry at the Oscars, it won awards for Best International Feature as well as Best Picture, the first film of its kind to do so.

I enjoyed it well-enough, but not as much as most people seem to have done. It was part of a box set that I owned for a while, bought in a sale. The B+W version was in there, too, but I didn't like the movie enough to watch it twice.

The only one of his movies that I've watched more than once is The Host. I love it. (I've a standalone edition of it, so had no need to keep the box set.)

I watched it before all the hype (same with Everything Everywhere All at Once), so I enjoyed it when it was still an underrated indie gem, but it does seem to have gotten pretty blown out of proportion. I would have given it 4½ on my initial viewing, but with the benefit of time and consideration, revisiting it has allowed me to appreciate it in even new ways, so 5 it is.
