Are We Good? (2025)

A portrait on Marc Maron, a neurotic, embittered comedian who deals with the loss of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, during the pandemic. Maron has always had a dark, sardonic disposition when he bares his soul on stage, but here he struggles to make light out of his grief. He comes off disagreeable and cantankerous most of the time, which makes him hard to stomach, yet is completely understandable given the circumstances, and honestly makes him feel more relatable than other personalities who have nothing original to say.

YOUR SISTER'S SISTER [2012]

I went into Lynn Shelton's Your Sister's Sister because I'm fond of Mark Duplass and Emily Blunt only to discover it's Rosemarie Dewitt who steals the whole show.
Relying heavily on improvised dialogue, the film explores all sorts of themes in a quiet, thoughtful manner that remains interesting from beginning to end.  The believability of the writing and strong performances is funny, heartbreaking and genuinely enjoyable.  It does resort to a few overused cliches but never enough to become frustrating.
