The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987)

Cabbage Patch Kids were for girls, Garbage Pail Kids were for boys. At least that's how it was marketed at the time. The appeal was that they were gross and offensive and featured grotesque illustrations with clever word play.
Sadly, this film displays none of that charm. Based on the Topps sticker trading cards, it desperately wants to be Gremlins and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but the best idea they can muster involves them running a sweatshop. I'd say the biggest sin this film commits is being boring, which is unforgiveable when you've got people running around in rubber suits, but in its defense, at least it doesn't involve CGI. Staring at this artwork is a lot more fun than watching the movie, that's for sure. Viewing this as an adult feels like I've come full circle.

You went for it. >_<
It's such a missed opportunity.
The age gaps in the primaries was crazy, and didn't help the believability.
The people in the suits deserve praise, though. They obviously couldn't see shit.
In an alternate reality, a half-decent movie was made.

I had to excise about two-thirds of my thoughts in order to keep this to succinct nut length, but I have so many memories associated with this one as a kid. I used to annoy my parents constantly to rent two movies for me: Beetlejuice and Garbage Pail Kids. One of those is one of my favorite movies. The other just desperately wants to be. Weirdly, after every time I watched it, I completely wiped it from my brain, so I kept getting burned over and over by the same film. All because of those damn sticker cards and the VHS cover which suggested something far better.

I always thought the far more interesting story had to do with the main kid having a crush on the older girl who's out of his league, but they didn't do much with it.

If I'm being perfectly honest, this is probably a zero from me, but the rating flows so much better as a positive number.
