Hamnet (2025)

A fictionalized account of a young William Shakespeare and Agnes Hathaway, and what would eventually become the inspiration for Hamlet. It's a lot less dull than it sounds, as the bard himself takes a backseat to all the melodrama. Jessie Buckley (as Hathaway) easily takes best actress of the year in one of the most moving, affecting performances I've ever seen. I still don't know how to process it all correctly. So many tears, I never want to see it again.

Have you watched All is True (2018)? I liked it quite a bit. Good cast, too.

That one escaped my radar actually. I usually find Branagh’s films quite dry, but I’ll put it on the list.

Dry is a fair description, for sure, but I like the well-meaningness that comes through in his work; with some projects, you can feel that he cares about what he's doing, even though it doesn't always translate into excitement, like it probably should.

For All Is True, some knowledge (and a like) of Shakespeare is certainly helpful. Both of those things definitely influenced my feelings about it. I've been meaning to re-watch it to see if I feel the same second time around, but I can't find the disc.

You've did a few Shakespeare related things over the years, so I figured it might be of interest. If not, you might want to give it a miss. It's a slow film.
