Prequel to the popular A Quiet Place franchise. Does what it says on the tin.
One day, without any warning, alien monsters descend from the sky on a mission to wipe out humanity. They are blind, but follow their prey by sound. This film accomplishes pretty much the same task as the original, except it's in an urban setting and not everyone understands what is happening yet. They make easy pickings for the monsters, while one pensive, cancer-stricken woman (and her cat) navigate a path to survival amidst all the chaos and destruction. If you liked the other films, it'll be right up your alley. Not necessarily a bad flick, but prequels often don't add much to the mythology.

The first Quiet Place film looked really good and was getting rave reviews, so I picked it up cheap and gave it a watch. The camerawork was good and its attempt at world-building was admirable, but the story asked us to accept too much dumb shit, which I couldn't do. Clearly, the writers didn't even question the logic of what they wrote. For example, why let the kid walk at the back end of the line where the family can't even see him? In fact, why bring him to the shops at all? And that's just in the first 10 minutes!
ReplyDeleteIt took about 20 minutes to realise that all they had to do to incapacitate the threat was to [spoiler], which is basically what they did after a protracted, agonising period of them being unbelievably thick.
Unsurprisingly, I didn't watch Part II. :)

ReplyDeleteI was going to nut the other films but I have too many others planned. Now I'm kind of relieved I didn't. 😬
I read back what I wrote; it sounds dickish and angry, which wasn't the intention. The dickish is probably just me, naturally, but it wasn't supposed to come across as angry. It was an outpouring of disappointment, because it was such a great idea to make sound a kind of enemy in a medium that relies so heavily on it. I really wanted to like the film for that reason, but the gaping logic-holes were inescapable and they ruined it for me.

Fair enough. In order for these movies to work, you have to buy into the ridiculous premise first. That makes it easier to deal with the bone-headed decisions later. ;)
ReplyDeleteThey're making a Quiet Place 3 (which they're calling the "final" film in the franchise), so I'll probably rewatch them in time for that.
